What’s in it for you?
The 13-month Rail Engineering Operative Flexi-Job Apprenticeship has been designed so you will become multi-disciplined in track work. You will gain a wide variety of skills and knowledge.

Role Summary

As part of a team of Rail Track Maintenance Workers you will inspect, maintain and repair railway lines and associated services.

Main Responsibilities

Assisting in the construction, installation, renewal, enhancement, and modification of the railway

Assisting with fault finding and diagnosis to prevent or address equipment failures

Maintenance and replacement of components

Assisting in functional and operational testing and inspection of The Railway using specialist equipment

Vegetation Clearance

Using tools such as picks, spades, and pneumatic drills, together with specialist tools for securing rails.

 

Hours
When the railway slows down, we work, so the working hours are predominantly nights and weekends. This is not a 9-5 weekday job. A typical working week is on average 45 hours per week.

 

What qualifications will I achieve?

Level 2 Certificate as a Rail Engineering

Level 2 in Maths and English (If you do not already have these)

As well as specific rail training; PTS (Personal Track Safety), AC (Alternating Current), DCCR (DC Conductor Rail), Track Induction, OLEC (Overhead Line Construction Competences) 1, and a large variety of small tools and plant hours

Further specific training will be available throughout the apprenticeship

This will be made up of e-learning, classroom participation and practical elements. These qualifications will allow you to gain access as well as work on the railway.

 

What are we looking for?

This apprenticeship is open to all candidates over the age of 18. We particularly encourage applications from women, who are currently under-represented within the rail industry. All female applicants will be guaranteed an interview.

You must be prepared to work varied shift patterns, outdoors in all weathers (nights, weekends, and bank holidays)

We need your committed for a 13-month programme

You will be prepared to travel on occasions, sometimes staying away from home (hotels provided)

You should have excellent communication skills and be able to work well as part of a team

A good attitude towards learning and a self-disciplined, self-motivated, proactive approach

Understand the importance to follow instructions, policies, and procedures in a safety-critical environment

Due to the varied locations of the work sites, a Driving License and access to own vehicle will be a distinct advantage but not essential
