Are you interested in developing problem solving, engineering and fault-finding skills and experience? We are looking for apprentices to join a team at the Edinburgh Tram Depot to learn how to carry out maintenance and fault finding on our state-of-the-art fleet of Trams.

Successful candidates will become qualified Technicians in an electrical, mechanical or dual skilled capacity.

Apprenticeship summary

Annual wage: £18,875

Working week: Monday to Friday within the core hours of 07:00 – 18:00. Total hours per week 40.

Expected apprenticeship duration: 4 Years

Apprenticeship Level: EAL SVQ 3 Engineering Maintenance at SCQF Level 6 (multi-skilled)

We are looking for apprentices who work well as part of a team, possess excellent communication skills, enjoy problem solving and like a challenge. Working in a close knit and collaborative team, apprentices will be working alongside the existing Technicians and supporting daily operations with a focus on electrical, engineering and fault-finding. The successful apprentices will be expected to work as part of a professional team ensuring the fleet of Rolling Stock vehicles are maintained to a high standard and available for passenger service. The successful applicants will develop and make use of engineering skills, to carry out preventive and corrective maintenance on the rolling stock vehicles in the workshop facility.

The role involves working on depot within a workshop environment or outside on stationary trams on a track.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

The Apprenticeship Programme will include.

Year 1 & 2 – 2 days a week at Edinburgh College Midlothian Campus and 3 days per week at Edinburgh Tram Depot
Year 3 & 4 – Full time at the Edinburgh Tram Depot At the end of the 4-year Apprenticeship you will have the following qualifications:
Performing Engineering Operations [Electrical Route] SVQ Level 2
NC Higher Electrical Engineering
Level 3 Modern Apprenticeship in Engineering Maintenance (Multi-Skilled) at SCQF Level 6

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

The successful candidates will become qualified Technicians in an electrical, mechanical, or dual skilled capacity. On successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to take on a role as a Preventive, Corrective or Modification Technician in the Edinburgh Tram Depot or other possible rolling stock projects.

Desired qualifications and personal qualities

NAT5 or equivalent in English, Maths and Physics or Engineering Science
Fantastic candidates will be Efficient, Adaptable, Cooperative, Proactive, Reliable & Trustworthy and be able to provide examples of where they have had to show these qualities.
You must also be an organised individual with strong communication skills and attention to detail.
Strong IT skills are a must. You will need to be proficient with the full office suite – Word, Excel etc. and be able to use tablets
