Wheel lathe – Team Leader

Bounds Green (London)

£55,176 +15% Shift allowance

+£6000 location allowance if required.

In this exciting role, is an opportunity for an experienced Wheel lathe – Team Leader to join our Bounds Green depot in London. Responsible on a shift basis for the wheel lathe operatives. Ensuring the safe operation of the underfloor
wheel lathe, undertaking corrective and preventative wheel maintenance for Our rolling stock assists.

 

Responsible for the following management work scopes :-

Deployment of the initial and ongoing depot operational processes and procedures relating to the
maintenance and repair of Hitachi rolling stock assets.

  • Responsible for writing and the deployment of the necessary operational processes and procedures for the wheel lathe and associated equipment…

  • Support the continued development of the SAP maintenance management system (MMS). Ensure all shop floor requirements are captured and delivered.

  • Constant Improvement – Create an atmosphere through his/her team that seeks to constantly improve the process associated with the maintenance.

  • Identify wheel lathe workloads; time required and Identify staff numbers and strengths to enable work to be conducted on time.

  • Staff Appraisals – Yearly performance and develop plans for the all wheel lathe team members.

  • Three monthly and six monthly probationary period reviews for new employees on shift.

  • Health & safety – Ensure team members follow the correct working practices at all times. All relative PPE equipment is being used. Ensure road ways/pits are kept clean after work. Carry out incident investigations, manage the PICOT process.

  • Annual leave / sickness – Authorise/Decline annual leave request for the team. Take into account, work load / leave already booked and planned training.

  • Record and monitor sickness a crossed the team, undertaken return to work interviews as required.

  • Liaise with Us and external personnel as required to complete the duties of the post.

  • Support the shift Team Leader and Maintenance Engineers as required.

  • Fleet Delivery – Support the Service Delivery Manager, Ensure that corrective and preventative wheel lathe work is undertaken to ensure contractual reliability and availability is achieved.

  • Constant Improvement – Create an atmosphere through his/her team that seeks to constantly improve all process associated with wheel lathe maintenance.

  • Planning – Plan proactive and corrective wheel lathe maintenance for Hitachi rolling stock assists.

  • Proactive Wheel Maintenance – Develop a preventative maintenance regime for wheel sets to determine optimum efficient distance between lathe visits for the Hitachi rolling stock assists.

  • Maintenance Management System (SAP) Monitor the SAP system to ensure all work is recorded within the Management System.

  • Wheel Set Data Base – Establish a wheel set data base to capture and record detail history of each wheel set. Record work undertaken into a wheel set data base when required.

  • Post Turning Requirements – Ensure that post tyre turning work is conducted to return the vehicles to the correct ride height

  • Maintenance of specialist equipment – Ensure the daily, weekly, monthly operator maintenance checks on the underfloor lathe are conducted and recorded. Report and defects to the depot facilities
    manager for rectification.

  • Waste and materials – Record and order through stores any materials / oils required to maintain the safe reliably operation of the underfloor wheel lathe. Ensure that all waste generated is safely HRE-HUR-REC-0018 Iss 1.0 – JD Wheel Lathe Team Leader disposed of in accordance with agreed procedures.

  • Health & Safety/House Keeping – Ensure team members are following correct working practices at all times. All relative PPE equipment is being used. Ensure road ways/pits are kept clean after work. Carry out incident investigations, manage the PICOT process

  • Annual Leave / Sickness – Authorise/Decline annual leave request from team. Take into account, work load/depot drivers/KICC/current leave/training/Team Leader cover.

  • Health & Safety/House Keeping – Ensure team members are following correct working practices at all times. All relative PPE equipment is being used. Ensure road ways/pits are kept clean after work.
    Carry out incident investigations, manage the PICOT process

 

As required

  • Plan and implement shift rosters around lathe utilisation as required.

  • To act as main focal point for all wheel lathe work activities…

  • Carry out team briefings/tool box talks.

  • Attend Manager Meetings when required.

  • Develop professionally and support good working relationships

  • Learn New skills in accordance with Hitachi’s new business demands as required

  • Must be prepared to travel and overnight away from base location for short periods of time to support

  • Train commissioning and undertake initial training

  • Undertake the duties of the wheel lathe technician when/

 

Required Skills/ Knowledge

  • Network Rail Sentinel PTS, Manual Handling, COSHH

  • Experience of direct and indirect assessment of wheel lathe staff on the shop floor.

  • Experience of leading a wheel lathe team on a shift bases in a modern rolling stock maintenance depot environment.

  • Outstanding Safety Awareness gained in an operational railway engineering environments.

  • Highly experienced in undertaking preventative and corrective wheel lathe work on modern rolling stock.

  • Experience with stores, spare parts logistics and material management on a railway maintenance depot.

  • Extensive experience of modern maintenance management systems (MMS) and associated

  • Reliability and available trend analysis.

  • Strong man management skills and experience of managing a team of wheel lathe engineers on shift work.

  • Experience of 3rd party lathe work and associated procedures.

 

Qualifications

  • M & E HNC or served engineering apprenticeship or proven equivalent railway experience.

  • Engineering based NVQ level 3

 

Behavioural

  • Sound knowledge of, and compliance to, rules and regulations (internal and external)

  • Able to represent Hitachi in a professional manner at all times

  • HRE-HUR-REC-0018 Iss 1.0 – JD Wheel Lathe Team Leader

  • Proven experienced team leader with very strong leadership skills

  • Calm and diplomatic under pressure

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Able to interface effectively with all levels of personnel both within and outside the company.

  • Loyal, committed, confident and determined.

 

Desirable

  • Intermediate IT skills – typically Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook

  • Reading electrical, pneumatic, mechanical schematics and drawings reading

  • Train driving, Fire warden, First Aider

  • Powered plant and tools – bogie drop, cranes, air systems / 110v tools

  • Depot Protection

  • Working at Height, COSHH, Manual handling, AC/DC Depot isolation
