About the Role:

As a Mechanical Fitter, you’ll play a hands-on role in the servicing, overhaul, and restoration of our historic fleet of steam and diesel locomotives. Working in our dedicated Loughborough Loco Works, you’ll use your engineering skills—and particularly your experience with machine tools—to help keep Britain’s only double-track heritage main line running safely and smoothly.

This is a safety-critical role at the heart of our operational railway.

Key Responsibilities:

Carry out mechanical fitting, machining, welding, and pipework as part of locomotive and rolling stock maintenance.
Operate and maintain engineering machine tools (e.g. lathes, milling machines, grinders) to fabricate and refurbish mechanical components.
Conduct servicing, inspections, and fault diagnosis on steam and diesel locomotives.
Support shunting, vehicle movements, fuel handling, and operational tasks as required.
Contribute to film and test train contracts, and assist in operational emergencies when needed.
Work collaboratively with a mixed team of staff and volunteers in a heritage environment.

Essential:

A solid grounding in mechanical engineering, particularly in a workshop setting using machine tools.
Proven practical skills in fitting, fabrication, welding, and general mechanical maintenance.
A proactive, safety-first attitude and willingness to work outdoors in all conditions.
Strong communication and teamworking skills.
Flexibility to support operations on evenings and weekends when required.

Desirable:

Experience working in a railway or heritage engineering environment.
Operational railway competence (e.g. shunter, guard, driver) or willingness to train.
A genuine enthusiasm for heritage railways and industrial heritage.

Application deadline: 04/08/2025.
