Design Manager

I am looking to speak to Design Managers with a strong contractor background to lead multi‑disciplinary design delivery across complex utilities works (water, gas and comms) on large infrastructure projects in London. You’ll work closely with the project delivery team, PMs, engineers, and QS’s to drive buildable, safe, and compliant designs from early stage through to construction and handover.

This could suit a Project Manager who has transitioned into design management and now wants to lead end‑to‑end design delivery on a major project.

Key Responsibilities

Own the design management plan, programme, and deliverables across multiple packages (utilities diversions, connections, protection and interfaces).
Coordinate internal teams and external designers
Lead design reviews, HAZOP/HAZID, constructability and value engineering workshops.
Ensure designs meet technical standards, client specifications, statutory approvals and CDM requirements.
Manage interfaces with highways, rail, third‑party utilities, local authorities and other stakeholders.
Control design risk, change, and assurance; maintain robust design registers and trackers.
Drive timely approvals and smooth handover to site with clear red‑line/as‑built processes.
Support procurement with technical scopes, tender queries and design clarifications.

About You

Proven Design Manager (or PM‑to‑Design‑Manager pathway) within a tiered contractor or major subcontractor.
Strong experience in utilities (water, gas, comms) on large infrastructure projects.
Confident leading multi‑disciplinary design through all stages
Excellent stakeholder management and communication across client, designer and site teams.
Solid understanding of CDM, temporary works, NRSWA/Street Works and utility statutory processes.
Able to read drawings/specs, challenge designs constructively, and drive buildable solutions.
Relevant degree or equivalent experience in civil engineering/related discipline.

What’s on Offer

Permanent role based in London with a leading infrastructure contractor.
Competitive salary and package, clear progression pathways, and exposure to landmark programmes.
Collaborative culture with genuine support from pre‑construction through delivery.
