Head of Engineering – Rail 
£65,000 – £85,000 + performance bonus
Location: Glasgow / Down to Manchester Hybrid with travel (~50%)

What we’re looking for
Chartered Engineer (IMechE or IET) – essential
Minimum 5 years managerial experience at senior level (ideal)
Knowledge of railway plant operations, traction, and electrification safety
Strategic thinker with strong planning, organisational, and leadership skills
Ability to motivate teams and drive a culture of continuous improvement
Full UK Driving Licence and willingness to travel (approx. 50%)

About the role:
We are seeking an experienced Head of Engineering to lead on Mechanical & Electrical Engineering (M&EE) assurance, standards, and strategy. You will ensure operational compliance, safety, and technical leadership across our plant fleet and locomotive operations.

 

Key responsibilities
Provide visible leadership on M&EE standards and procedures
Oversee technical reviews of legislation, standards, and specifications
Lead development, review of engineering procedures
Direct technical audits and ensure risk controls are implemented
Support the introduction of new technology and approval processes
Represent the company at cross-industry forums and lead best practice integration
Shape recruitment, training, and CPD for engineering staff
