Key Responsibilities:

Ensure that all vehicles, plant and equipment are subject to routine maintenance by competent service personnel at or before the service intervals prescribed in the relevant service instructions
Ensure that all vehicles, plant and equipment is inspected in the statutory manner and at the required intervals
Arrange attendance for breakdowns and recovery of equipment as necessary
Prioritise and allocate service and repair work to the service personnel
Order spares and consumables as appropriate to operational needs
Ensure that all spares and consumables are checked for compliance and stored in an appropriate manner
Maintain comprehensive records, both electronically and in hard copy, for each vehicle and item of plant and equipment to demonstrate the performance of all pre-hire checks, routine servicing, statutory inspection and breakdown repair
Ensure that all service records and associated paperwork is properly completed and signed by the person performing the service activity
Ensure that plant and vehicles are available to meet the Company’s commitments to its Clients
Ensure the correct specification and supply of lifting accessories and that a register of all such equipment and its correct servicing is maintained
Notify the HSE Manager of any new substances purchased and provide information on any associated hazards. To follow all instructions you are given about any substances (within the scope of the Company’s Safety Management Procedure) regardless of the origin of the instruction itself
Help recruit and select fitting staff and manage and develop these staff on a daily basis
Manage and control service expenditure within budget
Maintain administration and planning and ensure proper and prompt reporting to other departments
Ensure ongoing communication with Clients, outside agencies and Depot and Area Managers
Maintain technical knowledge of fleet vehicles and plant, updating as necessary
Assess the impact of changes to the make up of the Company’s fleet and provide suitable feedback to the management team
Ensure that all site activities comply with Company procedures and standards for quality, environmental and health and safety management, Client and rail and legislative requirements
Ensure that all errors, non-compliance and complaints are logged, raised and handled according to the requirements of the Company’s QMS system
Assume the responsibilities and duties of the safety critical fitters in times of absence, illness or other inability to discharge their allotted role
Essential Skills

Proven understanding and experience of the specifying, maintenance and inspection of vehicles and plant within scope
Qualified or time-served fitter with heavy plant experience
In-depth knowledge of the rules, regulations and legislative requirements pertinent to vehicles, plant and equipment, especially that are used on the railway
Personal track safety certification
People-management and motivational skills, experience and natural ability
High level of computer literacy
