Which route will you take?
We have three engineering disciplines to choose from;
1. Signalling: Our signalling staff work in teams of two or three people and maintain the signals, or points, and track circuits of the rail network, ensuring smooth and safe operations. They work 24/7 shift patterns, diagnosing and repairing electrical faults in signalling equipment through varied and challenging conditions.
2. Track (also known as ‘Permanent Way’): Teams of five to six track workers club together to maintain and repair the tracks that carry 18,000 passenger trains and 1,000 freight trains daily. They use advanced technology and manual inspections to keep our rail network safe and efficient.
3. Overhead Line: In teams ranging from two to six people, they ensure the integrity of overhead lines, enabling millions of passengers to travel safely every day. Work includes planned maintenance and rapid response to faults both of which include various safety checks.
