About the role:

We’re seeking proactive Rolling Stock Engineers to drive both the technical and operational performance of our fleet. You’ll provide hands-on engineering support to our own production teams and third-party maintainers, ensuring safety, reliability, and maintainability. This includes maintaining and optimising vehicle VMIs, implementing engineering changes to improve performance, and conducting thorough root cause investigations into defects.

Alongside your technical expertise, you’ll take ownership of fleet performance KPIs—overseeing root cause data collection, validation, analysis, target setting, and reporting. You’ll develop and implement performance improvement plans, working closely with Operations, Network Rail, leasing companies, suppliers, and other stakeholders to deliver measurable reliability improvements. Your role will bridge the gap between engineering and operations, ensuring that projects, processes, and partnerships align to deliver the best possible service to our customers.

Key responsibilities include:

Own all Fleet Engineering activities and vehicle maintenance documentation, ensuring safety, compliance, reliability, availability, and customer outcomes.
Set, monitor, and review KPIs for technical and safety performance, ensuring that all safety-related events are investigated and corrective actions implemented.
Analyse statistical, technical and operational data to identify technical and performance issues, and develop solutions or mitigations to improve reliability, safety, train presentation, and asset performance.
Manage all engineering modifications, changes, and NIRs, ensuring full compliance with regulations, correct documentation, and approval processes.
Support depot and third-party maintainers with technical advice, coaching, and guidance, holding external teams to account for delivery to agreed standards.
Prepare investment cases to support performance and lifecycle cost improvements, working with ROSCOs to ensure best value from fleet leases and maintenance strategies.
Develop and deliver Performance Improvement Plans, holding action owners accountable and reporting on progress and impact.
Engage with Network Rail and other stakeholders via Joint Performance Boards, leading all fleet-relevant aspects of performance strategy, funding opportunities, and collaborative projects.
Validate and maintain the integrity of fleet performance data (MP701D/MTIN) and ensure accurate recording of defects and incidents.
Lead or participate in joint investigations into performance issues, including people/machine interface challenges, and develop technical solutions with stakeholders.
Chair operations forums to ensure effective communication between fleet teams, drivers, control, and onboard teams.
Promote and deliver innovation, adopting industry best practice and integrating improvements into digital solutions where possible.
Deputise for the Fleet Engineering Manager, Fleet Performance Manager, and other colleagues as required.
