As a Fleet Engineering Trainer / Assessor, you will be responsible for delivering safety-critical training and conducting competence assessments in line with the Engineering Competency Management System (CMS). You will develop and deliver both technical and non-technical training courses, carry out safety-critical and non-safety-critical engineering assessments, and conduct verifications of engineering assessments to ensure the robustness and compliance of the assessment process. Additionally, you will support the continuous improvement of the engineering training function by providing feedback, tracking key performance indicators, and aligning activities with CMS standards and procedures.

In addition, you will line manage Engineering Apprentices, guiding their development and ensuring alignment with apprenticeship programme requirements. You will also act as deputy to the Fleet Training & Competence Manage as needed, perform competence spot checks, provide technical support, and contribute to fleet investigations and audits.

 

Key responsibilities include:

Act as lead Trainer, Assessor, and Internal Quality Assurer across the Engineering function, supporting the delivery of a robust and compliant Competency Management System (CMS).
Support the identification of training needs and contribute to the development and implementation of the Fleet Training Strategy in line with Engineering RBTNA and legislative requirements.
Develop and deliver engaging training materials tailored to a range of learner needs, enhancing technical, non-technical, and functional skills across the engineering team.
Plan and conduct technical and non-technical training courses for Safety Critical and Non-Safety Critical staff, ensuring alignment with safety, performance, and reliability objectives.
Carry out Safety Critical and Non-Safety Critical competence assessments, contributing to the implementation of the Engineering Assessment Plan and ensuring consistently high standards.
Perform internal verifications of assessments in accordance with CMS standards, supporting the Internal Quality Assurance process across the Fleet function.
Provide feedback and input into CMS standards and procedures to support compliance with railway legislation, industry standards, and internal safety certification requirements.
Report and analyse Fleet Training KPIs to support continuous improvement, staff development, and succession planning.
Maintain accurate training and assessment records using the Electronic CMS system, ensuring timely uploads and supporting system users.
Line manage Engineering Apprentices, providing mentoring, performance feedback, and stakeholder engagement to ensure successful programme completion and qualification achievement.
Scope, plan and manage the delivery of the Apprenticeship Programme in line with regulatory and internal standards.
Conduct Competence Spot Checks, audits, and Level 1–3 investigations as required, implementing improvements and mitigating risks.
Provide professional technical support and guidance to Fleet staff, addressing real-time engineering issues to support ongoing performance and reliability.

 

What we’re looking for:

HNC or HND in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent relevant experience.
Strong technical knowledge and practical experience in traction and rolling stock engineering within the railway industry, both independently and as part of a team.
Knowledge of Competence Management Systems and Railway Engineering Standards
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and listening skills, with the ability to build strong working relationships and positively influence stakeholders across the Fleet function.
High attention to detail and strong ability to manage complex information accurately and efficiently.
