Are you a strategic thinker with a passion for driving commercial success?
We’re looking for a Commercial Lead to join our Programme Management Office (PMO) team and play a pivotal role in shaping the commercial direction of our projects. In this influential position, you’ll provide expert leadership and strategic advice to reduce risk, maximise opportunities, and ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget. You’ll lead the commercial function within PMO, working across capital works and business-wide initiatives, while building strong relationships with key stakeholders to keep costs and performance on track.


Key Responsibilities

What you’ll be doing:
As our Commercial Lead, you’ll take ownership of the commercial strategy for projects worth around £260m, ensuring they deliver maximum value and minimal risk. You’ll lead and develop a team within the PMO, including Senior and Project Managers, while working closely with senior stakeholders across the business and external partners. Your role will be pivotal in driving governance, compliance, and best practice across all commercial activities.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Providing strategic commercial leadership across capital works and business-wide projects.
  • Leading and coaching your team to embed robust commercial processes and governance.
  • Building strong relationships with senior stakeholders, contractors, and the Department for Transport (DfT) to ensure alignment and transparency.
  • Overseeing governance, risk management, and compliance with NEC4 and DfT requirements.
  • Driving cost control, forecasting, and commercial assurance to keep projects on time and within budget.
  • Acting as the key point of contact for all commercial matters, representing PMO at senior meetings.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

You’ll bring a strong blend of technical expertise, commercial acumen, and leadership skills to this role. To succeed, you should have:
  • Extensive experience in commercial and project management within large-scale infrastructure projects, ideally in both client and contractor environments.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction contract types, particularly NEC contracts, including amendments, early warning notices, and communication workflows.
  • Strong understanding of project controls disciplines such as schedule, change, and risk management, as well as baseline development for major programmes.
  • degree (or equivalent) in Project Management, Construction Management, or Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil).
  • Proven ability to set strategy, lead teams, and deliver long-term plans that drive positive business outcomes.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to engage and influence at executive level and across multiple functions.
  • A track record of implementing governance and assurance processes across complex projects.
