TITLE: Assistant Design Manager

LOCATION: Buckinghamshire

We are looking for an exceptional Assistant Design Manager to be a part of their ever-expanding team working on a brand new rail project! This role will be based in Buckinghamshire.

 

Reporting to the design manager or Senior Design Manager, support same in ensuring the Project’s Design Management Plan is rigorously implemented. Under leadership of DM or SDM, use Design Manager’s Toolkit to monitor performance of design subcontract packages and to drive delivery of cost-effective and compliant Contractor’s design within agreed timescales and fee budgets.

Implement design management procedures so as to comply with ISO 9001 design requirements and Client requirements for management of contractor’s design specified in the Contract. Participate in project’s implementation of Value Engineering, Design for Health and safety, and BIM

 

Specific Tasks and Responsibilities

Compliance with Design Management Procedures

Understand the requirements of ISO 9001 with respect to design.
Be familiar with contractor and VCUK tools and procedures and their application to achieve ISO 9001 compliance.
Revise and update project Design Management Plan.
Participate in control and tracking of design change using Design Manager’s Toolkit.
Participate in implementation of client’s design assurance procedures.
Behavioural Leadership

Support and exhibit the principles of the contractors Design Management Best Practice Guide to foster a collaborative relationship between design and production teams.
Assist the business/project in achieving the objectives/targets set in the contractors Carbon Strategy within your specific work activities.
Technical Oversight

Be familiar with the technical requirements of relevant aspects of the project.
Assist with ensuring technical co-ordination between disciplines.
Assist with review of design deliverables with respect to compliance with Client’s requirements as defined in the main contract, application of relevant British Standards and sector- or Client-specific standards, and production team requirements for buildability (cost, programme, safety, repeatability, and design for off-site manufacture).
Legislative Compliance

Ensure compliance with CDM regulations as they apply to design.
Oversee fulfillment of Principal Designer, Common Safety Method, and Engineering Safety Management functions to the extent that Taylor Woodrow has relevant duties to discharge on the particular project.
Design for Health and Safety

Challenge Work-in-Progress design and facilitate development of design that eliminates or mitigates construction health and safety risks; engage production team (contractor and supply chain) in design reviews to this end.
Ensure a Design Risk Register is established and periodically updated. Review the register and engage production team and specialist supply-chain expertise to agree on the most appropriate mitigation measures. Ensure designers communicate significant and unusual residual risks on SHE boxes for relevant drawings.
Ensure lead designer maintains Design Decision Register documenting all significant design decisions, including Health and Safety factors assessed in making the decision.
Commercial and Contract Administration

Support DM with respect to:

Administration of design sub-contract.
Administration of main contract with regard to Contractor’s design (raising Early Warnings, Compensation Event notifications, etc.)
Monitoring cost and schedule performance of sub-contracted designers using EPPR proforma from Design Manager’s Toolkit (or project-specific EVM-based pro-forma).
Review subcontracted designers’ applications for payment and authorize as appropriate.
BIM

Understand what BIM is, the contextual requirement for BIM Level 2 and its connection to the Government Construction Strategy and Industrial Strategy 2025.
Support DM in development of project BIM strategy and implementation of BIM Execution Plan.
